Hari & Deepti
Hari & Deepti are a husband-wife artist duo based in Mumbai and previously based out of Denver. Their collaboration with paper and light started as an experiment in 2010 .
Known internationally for their specific papercut and backlit style they moved to India from Denver in the fall of 2014. During this period they travelled to Asia and Europe collecting inspirations and stories for their art and showcasing their work through solo shows and workshops. They are story tellers who bring their stories to life through their intricate paper cut light boxes & have always been drawn towards the imaginative aspect of story telling. Stories have so many shades and depth in them, and paper as a medium has the exact qualities to reflect and interpret them.
They believe that “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”
They have been featured in many publications including Colossal, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Bored Panda, Supersonic Art, Laughing Squid, My Modern Met Blog, ArtFido and published in books like Paper Play & The Wold of Paper Art.
They are currently nominated for “Shorty Awards in Art, Social Media Awards” and have been curated to show at the prestigious art fairs like Context Art Fair, Select Art Fair & Scope Art Fair which is a part of the ART Basel show in Miami and New York and have exhibited there for 3 years in the running.
Hari & Deepti have also shown at galleries like Black Book Gallery (Denver), Svper Ordinary (Denver), Spoke Art (San Francisco), Lequivive (Oakland, SF) and did their first solo show in Europe at Blank Space Gallery (2015, Oslo, Norway) and had their first solo show in Asia - Taiwan at Pier 2 in Kaohsiung. In April 2016 they were invited by the Dubai Culture to be a part of the Dubai Art Season and to create a 6ft X 6ft paper cut installation ‘
They have also painted 4 murals including one of their largest murals in Denver, Colorado - a gigantic 125ft mural for New Belgium Brewing in the heart of the city. Their Globeville mural commissioned by the Denver Urban Arts Funds was also voted as the Best New Mural in Denver for the year 2014 by Westword.
In the fall of 2015 they finished painting a mural at a rural village school run by the NGO - Gram Vikas in Kankia, Odisha. This was a part of a art workshop they conducted at the art space - Kalpanadham for the local kids, promoting art and creative thinking.
